I am a collaborative and versatile Ph.D. candidate completing my dissertation on grassroots, multiracial housing cooperatives in the California Bay Area Peninsula. I am interested in teaching, education, research, technical writing, and content development. My research background is in African American history, Black Power Studies, and Latin American history. I lived and worked in several countries and am conversant in Spanish and Portuguese.

Assisted Dr. Amílcar Challú in instructing students in modern Latin American history. This upper-division course was cross-listed with political science, and therefore dealt with themes of economic development, political transformations, culture, and Latin America and its relation to the rest of the World. Duties included facilitating discussions, grading, and participating in the planning of the course and lessons.

Assisted Dr. Apollos Nwauwa in instructing students in themes in this cross-listed, upper-division course in history and ethnic studies. Themes included African traditional cultures, abolition, different types of colonial rule, the rise of nationalism, and independence. Duties included taking roll, grading papers, and facilitating regular discussion groups. I taught the course for two days with instructor approval when he was delayed at a conference in Nigeria.

Academic Internships

Summer internship with Southern Oregon Educational Service District (SOESD) Migrant Education. Principle duties were to promote Vroom Daily, a telephonic application developed by the Bezos Family (Amazon) designed for smartphones, online, and print. The application encourages parent-child interactions and early literacy. I presented the free application to parents at migrant parent meetings in school districts throughout Southern Oregon. I developed a bilingual website for the product at http://edmigrante.wix.com/vroomenglish and promoted it through community-based organizations and magazine venues such as the Revista Caminos, with a wide readership throughout Jackson County, Oregon. Trained developmentally disabled adults in life-skills and vocational settings. Developed an exercise program for clients at the Ashland YMCA. Organized outings to museums, libraries, movies, bowling, and cultural events.

  • $5,000 - Grant to support culinary arts program at Phoenix High School in Phoenix, OR. Purchases included a set of six new electric ranges, six sets of professional Analon cookware, a Vitamix, and a large-capacity Cuisinart. | 2014

  • $5,000 grant for 19 new computers to be appropriated throughout the Phoenix High School. We used ten computers for foreign language, six for English language development, and three for the college corner. | 2009

Cheney Family Foundation

  • $5,000 grant to support the acquisition of an electronic reader board for Phoenix High School. Students presented the grant during a site visit by Board members and won it with great praise. | 2013

  • $5,000 matching grant to Oregon Community Foundation grant (see below). Doubled project from $5,000 to $10,000. Awarded funds to OnTrack, Inc., Family Nurturing Center, CASA, Addictions Recovery Center, Magdalene Home, and Children’s Advocacy Center. | 2010

Phoenix-Talent Education Association

  • $500 – grant for digital picture frames, which broadcast approximately 400 Spanish verbs with accompanying pictures to strategic areas throughout the school (classrooms, attendance office, detention). A student wrote the grant application with my assistance. | 2009

Oregon Community Foundation

  • $5,000/year – Provided students at Phoenix High School $5,000 to act as a “grant-funding institution,” distributing funds to local community non-profits working in areas of need determined by a school-wide survey issued by students. Students followed a curriculum that met Oregon State’s career-related learning standards. I integrated it into a part of a Spanish for Native Speakers curriculum, a student-run awareness club, and a leadership class. The renewable grant continues at the school. During my tenure, it was renewed for a total of $30,000 in five years. | 2009-2014

Miller Foundation

  • $5,000 for study at Southern Oregon University’s Summer Language Institute (affiliated with the University of Guanajuato, Mexico). Grant paid for 100% of travel and expenses to study in a three-week Master’s program. Gathered resources for teaching and took Methods, Bilingualism, and Teaching Spanish to Heritage Speakers. | 2008
